When the Moat Becomes the Product

This field note was prompted by this following ad

It is an exploration of the structural question raised by the proposition, not a criticism or endorsement of the ad or its claims

Your cursor is hovering over the “join” button.

The workshop? Free of charge.

The marketer’s pitch is compelling. He has generated millions of views using an AI clone of himself.

He barely touches the work anymore.

The clone produces.

The views accumulate.

He is offering to teach you how to do the same thing.

And you know exactly what will happen if you buy into this.

Observation

You have been trying everything else.

  • Basic SEO. That stopped working three years ago when everyone else figured it out.
  • Content strategy. You have a good strategy. So does everyone else now.
  • Paid ads. You are bidding against people who are also running paid ads. The costs climbed until it stopped making sense.
  • AI SEO. For about six months, it worked. Then everyone figured out AI SEO. Now it is just noise in a louder pandemonium.

You have tried to differentiate…

You have tried to be authentic…

You have tried to provide real value…

And the market has responded by becoming more crowded. By becoming louder. By becoming harder to cut through.

Your content does not disappear.

It simply becomes invisible, lost in the endless feed of everyone else’s content.

Everyone trying the same strategies…

Everyone optimizing for the same metrics…

Everyone producing more and hoping that more will be the breakthrough…

It is not.

More is just noise competing against more noise.

And you are tired.

You are tired of optimizing.

You are tired of testing.

You are tired of producing content that nobody sees.

You are tired of the constant calculation about what might work this time.

Then this marketer appears.

He has found something that works.

He is not just producing content.

He is producing an AI version of himself.

The AI version produces content.

The AI version engages.

The AI version creates presence.

And he barely touches any of it.

He has found the edge. He has found the shortcut. He has found a way to break through the noise.

And he is offering to teach it to you.

Your cursor hovers over the join button. And in that moment, you think something that stops you for just a second:

If I do this, everyone else will too.

Structural Tension

You can see the structure clearly.

You have watched enough markets, been in the scene long enough, to understand what happens when a scarce advantage becomes widely available.

First, it creates a breakthrough. The person who finds it wins.

Then others discover it.

Then everyone figures it out.

Then it stops being an advantage.

It becomes the minimum viable effort, the baseline… the thing everyone has to do just to be in the game.

You have watched this happen with email marketing. Once it worked beautifully. Now it is just spam.

You watched it happen with social media. Once reaching people was free. Now you are competing against algorithms and paid ads and influencers and everyone else’s algorithm hack.

You watched it happen with content. Once writing something good got you an audience. Now writing something good gets you lost in a flood of content written by people using the same tools as you.

And now it is happening with AI clones.

Right now, the person marketing the workshop has an advantage because he discovered it first.

Soon enough, everyone who attends his workshop will have the same advantage.

Before you know it, everyone will have an AI clone producing content.

The constraint will not disappear. It will simply move.

Yesterday the constraint was: I don’t produce enough.

Tomorrow the constraint will be: Nobody can tell my clone’s output from anyone else’s clone’s output.

You will have solved the production problem, but not the discovery problem… which is the actual problem in the first place.

How much will you have spent in time, effort and thought to join everyone else in the new pandemonium… a bigger, louder, more crowded pandemonium where everyone is producing more content with AI clones?

And the thing that the marketer has for now – the edge, the differentiation, the audience – that thing will be gone.

Absorbed into the noise.

Commoditized.

You understand this completely.

You can see exactly how this plays out.

You can map the timeline.

  • Early adopters use the workshop contents
  • Then the results are visible, so more people buy.
  • Over time it becomes obvious that this works, so most people buy.
  • Finally, everyone has an AI clone, and nobody’s AI clone stands out.

You have seen this movie.

You know how it ends.

Structural Principle

And that is precisely why you are about to do it.

Because understanding the structure does not protect you from the desperation that makes the structure irrelevant.

You are invisible right now.

Not slightly invisible.

Genuinely invisible.

Your content disappears into the feed.

Your voice does not cut through.

Your presence does not accumulate.

You could be producing nothing and nobody would notice a difference.

So the choice is not actually: Should I buy this or should I maintain my differentiation?

There is no differentiation to maintain.

The choice is:

Should I remain invisible now while hoping for a different future?

Or should I become slightly less invisible now, knowing that the advantage will evaporate?

That is a different calculation entirely.

The join button is not offering you a long-term advantage. It is offering you survival through the next quarter. Visibility today in exchange for invisibility tomorrow when everyone else catches up.

But invisibility tomorrow is a future problem.

Invisibility today is a present problem.

And the present is where you live.

Closing Observation

Your cursor hovers.

You know what will happen.

You know that if you join this, everyone else will too.

You know that the advantage will evaporate.

You know that you are joining a race where everyone is accelerating at the same speed toward the same cliff.

You know that the marketer is not offering you a way to win.

He is offering you a way to not lose quite as visibly.

He is offering you an opportunity to become part of the problem that you are trying to escape.

And you are asking yourself a question that might be the hardest question: Am I making things better for myself and worse for everyone else?

The answer is yes.

If you do this, your visibility improves slightly. Yet the global signal-to-noise ratio gets worse. The market becomes more crowded. Everyone has to produce more to be seen.

The same energy that could have been invested in differentiation gets invested in acceleration.

And everyone ends up running faster toward the same invisibility.

You are not doing anything wrong…

The marketer is not doing anything wrong…

Everyone choosing to set up AI clones is not doing anything wrong…

Each individual choice is rational. But the collective result is that everyone is collaborating in their own commoditization.

And you can see it clearly.

You understand the structure.

You know what the outcome will be.

Your cursor hovers over the join button; and you are going to click it.

Not because you believe it will give you a lasting advantage.

But because the alternative is remaining invisible, remaining voiceless, remaining unheard in a market that is already too loud. And that alternative has become unbearable.

The cost of staying out is higher than the cost of joining in.

The cost of principle is higher than the cost of pragmatism.

The cost of waiting for a different strategy is higher than the cost of acceleration.

So you click. And in that moment, you become part of the system that is destroying the value you were trying to capture.

But you are no longer invisible.

For now.

Until everyone else clicks the button too… then you are back where you started.

Just louder…

And more crowded…

And more desperate.

And with everyone making exactly the same rational choice to accelerate into a market where acceleration has become the ONLY strategy.

The moat has become the product.

And the product has become the prison.

You are about to buy your way in, knowing exactly what you are buying… and doing it anyway.
